My Letter on Creature Features

Creature Features Artwork
Host Vincent Van Dahl holding the home made artwork from my kids.

I’ve talked about my enjoyment of the show Creature Features before. It is a program presented by a “horror host” that shows a… not so high brow movie (i.e. affordable to programs on a shoestring budget). But sometimes these are the best movies. They are cheesy and rare. Sometimes watching a “horror host” show like Svengoolie, Elvira Mistress of the Dark or Creature Features is the only way to see some of these weird and wonderful films. Yea some are bad enough that I probably wouldn’t give them a second viewing, but that’s what the hosts do. They make a bad film entertaining.

Creature Features has this segment where they read viewer mail. Some fans have sent them packages with gifts, others have provided artwork or letters with criticism/kudos. On Father’s Day, my kids created a home made Father’s Day card with the cast of Creature Features as the main part of the card. I had to scan the card and send it into the show. On Saturday, July 17th while airing the movie “The Titan Find” (an 80’s copycat of Aliens) the cast read the letter and showed off the artwork I had scanned. My kids were tickled pink that their work (and their names) were aired on the show. I even had a few friends buzz me that they had seen the segment.

For those of you who don’t know, every new episode of Creature Features is broadcast live on their YouTube Channel every Saturday night. You can also watch past episodes that they have done from the past 4-5 years. In most breaks from the movie, host Vincent Van Dahl is interviewing a special guest. They also post the “Letters to” segment as a separate video later in the week. Here is the segment with just the letters. My letter is the last letter in the video.

More character sheets from past games

Last month I posted that I had found an old three-ring binder that I had kept character sheets in from different role-playing games. Here are a few more character sheets that I wanted to share.

Doctor Who RPG Character Sheet
Doctor Who Character Sheet for Christopher Floyd.

I remember playing the Doctor Who Role Playing Game by FASA in the late 80’s and early 90’s. There was a group of friends who use to hang out at Comic Utah and watch Doctor Who episodes on the local PBS affiliate, KUED Ch. 7. On the back of this sheet I had written down an inventory list for Christopher Floyd (yea it was a play on the Christopher Lloyd name). His inventory included a trench coat, an adventures hat, a briefcase, a personal word-processor computer, lots of notes, two books he had written (he was an author turned adventurer to be inspired to write future novels), a flashlight, a snubnose .22 pistol with ammo, a drawing pad and several RPG books. While I remember the friends I played with, I don’t recall much of the campaign beyond attempting to hack an alien computer system with my personal computer.

Doctor Who Character Sheet for Christopher Floyd.
Doctor Who Character Sheet for Jacob Stine.

I remember making this character with the thought that Jacob Stine would have been a member of the underworld. Infiltration, assassination, burglary, etc. Like Christopher Floyd, I had his equipment written on the back of the sheet. Weapons, blacksuit, explosives, etc. I don’t recall if I had a chance to play this character, but I believed I used him as an NPC for a Doctor Who RPG that I ran.

I’ll be getting more character sheets scanned and posted soon.

Homebrewed Stats for Starships Part V

Past Entries:

Homebrewed Stats for Starships

Homebrewed Stats for Starships Part II

Homebrewed Stats for Starships Part III

Homebrewed Stats for Starships Part IV

I’ve had a chance to scan in a few more homebrewed stats from different tech resources. These are starships for FASA’s Star Trek Starship Combat Simulator. We are now in the Frigates used by Starfleet and start with the transports.

One of the favorites of Tech Fandom. This Coventry class was pulled from the black covered Ships of The Starfleet Volume One (published in 1987). I thought that this design would have seen action during the Four Years War.

This ships also came from the Ships of The Starfleet Volume One. I believe I also saw vessels of this class make an appearance in the second run of Star Trek Comics by DC Comics.

I don’t recall the source for this ship and stats. I want to go back and double check it again against the source material however. While I was scanning it, I was wondering if the 5000 passenger number was correct.

While the Knox Class was in the Ships of The Starfleet Volume One, I pulled the image and stats from a different source (probably the same as the Hippocrates Class listed above). I wonder if the stats would have been vastly different if I had pulled the info from SoSv1?

Another starship from the Franz Joseph Star Fleet Technical Manual. I created the back story about the Four Years War and the namesake. This was another case of not knowing who Ptolemy was and not having the modern google tools that I can use now.

Do I want to participate in RPGaDay 2021?

RPGaDay 2021 chart
The RPGaDay 2021 chart

Most of my readers recall the Character Creation Challenge that I put together in January. I had been considering a personal challenge to do in August (and started assembling items for it) when I had heard about RPGaDAY 2021. Apparently this is the eighth year that this challenge has been running. It has me a little intrigued and a little confused. As you can see from the graphic above, there is a different theme (or alternate themes) to use for inspiration. Some of these get, others… don’t draw any inspiration at all. Stream? Think? Mention?

I’ve set up a spreadsheet with all of the inspiration words on each date. A few I was able to fill in ideas immediately. I’m still going through the cobwebs of my mind to see if I could actually fill out a 31 day schedule for the others. So I thought I’d toss it out to you guys. Is there anything inspired by the words above that you’d love to see me talk about? I’m still fighting with the registration system in wordpress (I’m trying to keep out the spammers) so if you want to pass on an idea, feel free to email me at Carl (at) TardisCaptain.com and I’ll consider it.

I like the idea of participating in an RPG inspired challenge. I had a blast interacting with other gamers when we did the #CharacterCreationChallenge. I’d really like to do the #RPGaDAY2021 challenge. I just need to make sure that I’ll be able to complete the challenge if I start it.
